WORLD AIRWAYS 60th ANNIVERSARY - 1948 - 2008
World Airways was founded in 1948 by Edward J. Daly and the 60th anniversary was celebrated in year 2008. World Airways joined the aviation community with a small charter fleet of surplus Boeing 314 Clippers. Today, Georgia-based World Airways is one of the largest wide-body charter operators in the United States, carrying passengers and cargo, including the military, in every time zone. The company celebrated its 60th birthday on March 29,2008 with a kickoff event that began a year of activities to observe World’s diamond anniversary. Employees and family members gathered for a family day and special events staged at the Atlanta Georgia Delta Air Transport Heritage Museum near Hartsfield Jackson International Airport. Hundreds of photographs and video were taken at the special event and some of the photographs are posted here. Memorabilia donated by World employees including retirees were placed on display and will be included in a worldwide tour. A proud moment in the history of World Airways and all who have served over the many years. God speed World Airways. May the next 60 years be as successful and memorable.
A special thanks to Bill Gray, Bob Washington, Cheryl Lewis, Connie Klakis, Fletcher Holt, Mike Martin, and Sherry Brooks for sharing some of the photographs. Also Wally Rardon and the World Airways anniversary Committee for the many dedicated hours making the anniversary a success.
